Live view too dark on connected camera

If your camera settings are configured for flash photography, your camera’s live view may appear very dark. This happens because, by default, the camera’s Exposure Simulation feature attempts to display how the final image will look with the flash fired. Since the flash isn’t continuously active, the preview appears underexposed.

For Canon Cameras with Exposure Simulation Settings

Certain Canon models, including the 80D, 90D, 5D, 6D, M5, M50, and newer, allow you to disable Exposure Simulation to correct the live view display. To do this:

  1. Open your camera’s menu.
  2. Locate the setting labeled “Exp. Sim.” or “Exposure Simulation”.
  3. Turn it off—this will separate the live view exposure from the final photo, ensuring a properly lit preview.

For Older or Budget Canon Cameras

If you’re using a camera that does not offer an Exposure Simulation setting—such as the Canon M3, EOS Rebel SL1, SL2, T6i, T7i, etc.—you have limited options:

  • Use Continuous Lighting Instead of Flash – This provides a properly exposed live view.
  • Try Canon TTL-Compatible Flash – Some Canon-branded TTL flashes can help adjust live view exposure automatically.
  • Search for Model-Specific Workarounds – For some cameras, users have discovered alternative settings or tricks. Searching “<your camera model> exposure simulation” may provide additional solutions.
